BOB CROW NATIONAL RECRUITING DAY

R MT activists across the country marked the national Bob Crow recruiting day on 13 June by taking the union’s message directly into workplaces and speaking with transport workers about the importance of union organisation. RMT’s South East Regional Council chose London Marylebone Station as its focus, engaging with both Chiltern Railways employees and contract workers. Covering both early and late shifts, regional secretary Dan Kennedy led the initiative, joined by regional president Ivor Riddell, regional organiser John Parsons and NEC member Dan Gibbons. The team spoke with members and non-members alike, discussing the role of RMT, the benefits of collective organisation and why union membership remains as important as ever. Conversations proved productive, with several workers joining the union on the day by scanning RMT QR code recruitment fobs or taking away membership forms to complete later. The team also listened to members’ concerns about the future of Great British Railways (GBR), ongoing pay negotiations, uniforms and PPE provision, and the increasing use of Body Worn Video technology across the industry. During the visit, the team met newly elected station representative Zara, who provided an update on workplace organisation and membership density at Marylebone. The delegation also visited the cleaners’ facilities, which provide an excellent example of the standards that all cleaning staff across the railway should expect and deserve. South East president Ivor Riddell said that it had been a very productive day. “Activities like this demonstrate that the union is a constant presence in the workplace.
