RMT’s Apprentice Charter drawn up by the union’s young members’ committee was much admired by the judges as an “impressive recruitment programme targeting young transport workers. “The booklet featured a modern, visually appealing layout with diverse imagery. “Highlights included clear information on apprenticeship charters and a dedicated section for engaging young members, making the campaign both informative and highly effective,” they said. Judges also commended RMT News as a strong members’ magazine with a wide range of content. “It gives a solid sense of the union’s identity with its visual portrayals of solidarity,” judges agreed. They also praised the variety of stories, “which keep members informed about campaign priorities and union wins nationwide”. RMT regional organiser Steve Skelly led an organising day for members at the union’s Cardiff office. A large team of 48 persons pulled a four- tonne vehicle two miles junction to junction up the notorious greyhound hill out of Kendal, raising £4,000 for Sandgate school for disabled children. Part of the team was made up of Network Rail workers from the Carnforth depot, Neil Broclebank, Frankie Newel, Josh Rabbat and Kevin Kirby. The next challenge on Saturday 13 June will be a large 90 strong team attempting to pull a 4 x 4 vehicle two miles from Sedbergh’s football pitch in the Yorkshire Dales to the top of Winder Fell in the Howgill Fells.
