The company initially offered 4.5 per cent at a time when inflation had hit double figures. Following the threat of industrial action, the company revised a no strings offer of up to 8.4 per cent backdated to April. This included a £1,500 uplift on the basic rates for all grades below £33,350 plus an unconsolidated payment of £1,000 which meant that members received over £2,000 before Christmas. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch congratulated the membership for standing firm. “The company accepted the strength of felling among its workforce and has responded in a positive manner. “It goes to show that there is no substitute for industrial trade unionism organised in the workplace where it matters,” he said.
