RMT helpline 0800 376 3706 :: october 2018 :: RMTnews 10 TUC delegates this year marked the 150th anniversary of the first time trade unionists came together nationally to agree on a common programme for the trade union movement. The century and a half of history has seen substantial progress but the core fight for workplace, social and economic justice remains as relevant today as it would have been all those years ago. A traditional warm up was hosted by the National Shop Stewards Network in the beautiful Mechanics Institute building, a venue steeped with the history of the labour movement. It was an opportunity for RMT general secretary Mick Cash to set out the union’s stall for Congress, laying in to the Transport Secretary’s planned pay assault on RMT members the length and breadth of the rail industry: "Chris Grayling has made it crystal clear that he intends to try and impose a nationwide pay cap on RMT members linked to the bogus CPI inflation figure. “Any such move would rob workers of thousands of pounds across Network Rail, the train operating companies and quite possibly London Underground as well. "The CPI measure Grayling is promoting doesn't even take into account the cost of a roof over your head and if he seriously thinks that our members are going to take the hit to their pay for his incompetence and the greed of the train companies he has got another coming. “RMT will be mobilising a national campaign to smash the pay cap which will include the use of co-ordinated industrial action if required to protect and enhance our members pay and conditions,” he said. His contribution to the rally was warmly received and as Congress assembled, RMT delegates were on the conference rostrum as the debates got underway. Mary-Jane Herbison seconded the motion on women’s rights in the workplace: “Recent coverage of the MeToo campaign has brought to the forefront the day-to-day struggle of women in our society. This unspoken problem has been going on for decades. “I work in a male-dominated industry.
