These attacks include massive fare increases and the widespread use of less safe Driver Only Operated (DOO) Trains, cuts to station staffing and ticket office closures. Northern Rail has engaged an army of contractors (STM) to carry out revenue duties on stations – the number of these contractors has gone up from 155 to an estimated 400 in a year. It’s quite clear these staff are needed so why aren’t they directly employed by Northern on proper wages, terms and conditions with access to joining and contributing to the company pension scheme?
