Delegates, meeting in Liverpool, condemned Network Rail for its plans to axe 1,500 safety-critical track maintenance jobs as part of its “phase 2 b/c” reorganisation plans. They also censured the company for its deferral of essential renewals work elsewhere – a practice which led to the collapse of engineering contractor Jarvis in March with the loss of more than 1,200 jobs. Gordon Martin, Wishaw and Motherwell, told conference that cuts and deferrals were being forced through by Network Rail “on behalf of the British government,” adding: “this is a political and industrial attack on our members.” RMT faced two choices – it could accept the attacks or “do
